Our Team
We are a highly experienced team of fellowship trained Consultant Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgeons providing expert, evidence-based management of fractures and other injuries sustained during trauma, falls and sport. By working collaboratively we can manage a wide variety of injuries and fractures affecting the knee, ankle, foot, shoulder, elbow, hand and wrist. The team meets regularly to discuss interesting or challenging cases. This multi-disciplinary team (MDT) approach to the review of cases ensures that we deliver optimal care.

All our surgeons trained in the UK, work locally, and are involved in the delivery of trauma and fracture services as part of their regular NHS practice.
Miss Toni Ardolino
Consultant Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgeon
Miss Toni Ardolino is a Trauma and Orthopaedic Consultant Surgeon. She has an NHS practice at Basingstoke and North Hampshire and The Royal Hampshire County Hospitals where she works as part of the on-call fracture service. Toni trained at Nottingham University with basic and higher surgical training in Oxford and Wessex regions respectively. She completed a trauma fellowship in Oxford at the John Radcliffe Hospital and an AO trauma fellowship at Penn Medicine Hospital in Philadelphia. She also worked in the Department of Health for a year as a Clinical Advisor to the Chief Medical Officer.
Toni has an MSc in Trauma Surgery and is on the Orthopaedic Trauma Society Committee, a subspecialist society of the British Orthopaedic Association. As well as a keen interest in trauma surgery she sits on the National Selection Design Committee responsible for the recruitment process of Trauma and Orthopaedic trainees. She is subspecialty editor for the journal “Surgery”.
Toni is also Deputy Clinical Director for Trauma and Orthopaedics and the Trauma Unit Lead Clinician for Basingstoke Hospital attending the Wessex Trauma Network Board and Governance meetings.
In her spare time Toni has two children which keep her busy, and she enjoys going to the gym, swimming and sketching.
Mr Bob Elliot
Consultant Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgeon
Mr Bob Elliot is a Trauma and Orthopaedic Consultant Surgeon. He has an NHS practice at Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust where he continues to work as part of the on-call fracture service.
Bob studied Biochemistry at Oxford University, before going on to study medicine at St. Mary’s Hospital in London. His basic surgical training was in London before moving to Hampshire for Trauma and Orthopaedic training. In September 2008 he travelled on an AO trauma fellowship to Liestal in Switzerland. In 2009 he was awarded an HCA International Fellowship Travelling Scholarship and spent a year training under renowned surgeon Dr Terry Saxby in Brisbane, Australia.
Bob was appointed Clinical Director for Trauma and Orthopaedics at Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust between 2016 and 2019. Bob has worked as a Specialist Adviser to the Care Quality Commission on matters relating to Trauma and Orthopaedics. Bob is currently Hampshire Hospitals Trauma Unit Lead Clinician reporting to the Wessex Trauma Network.
In his spare time Bob enjoys swimming, cycling and fly fishing. He is an age group lead coach at Winchester Rugby Football Club.
Mr Alex Nicholls
Consultant Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgeon
Mr Alex Nicholls has been a Trauma & Orthopaedic Consultant Surgeon at Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust since March 2019. He works at both Basingstoke and Winchester Hospitals as part of the on-call fracture service.
Alex qualified from Birmingham University before completing orthopaedic training in the Wessex region, gaining fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons as well as an MSc in Trauma Surgery. He then completed 2 years of overseas fellowships to further his training: a trauma and reconstruction fellowship in Cambodia was followed by two further fellowships in Sydney, Australia and a travelling fellowship in California.
He has published research and lectured internationally, including various fracture and sports injury topics. His experience in Cambodia led to an interest in the treatment of more complex or missed injuries, and he continues to be involved in Global Surgery projects in Asia and Africa.
Alex believes in keeping up to date with the latest treatments for his patients. He is a member of the British Orthopaedic Association, the Orthopaedic Trauma Society, the British Society for Surgery of the Hand and the British Elbow and Shoulder Society.
In his spare time Alex enjoys spending time with his family, cycling, skiing, cooking and, increasingly, supporting his children from the touchline most of the weekend!
Mr Duncan Avis
Consultant Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgeon
Mr Duncan Avis graduated with Honours from the University of Bristol Medical School in 2004 having first completed a degree in Archaeology.
His general surgical training; including academic, teaching and research roles; was undertaken in Bristol, the South West and South Wales. He subsequently moved to the Wessex region for his specialist orthopaedic training.
Duncan has an MSc in Trauma Surgery and spent a year on Fellowship at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital and Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham – the receiving centre for all UK military trauma.
Duncan was appointed as a Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon at Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust in July 2017. He has a busy elective and trauma practice and is involved in the trauma on call service. Duncan is Clinical Director for Trauma and Orthopaedics for the Trust. He is a faculty member for the AO Foundation – an international trauma education organisation.
Duncan is a member of the British Orthopaedic Association and British Society for Surgery of the Hand.
Out of work Duncan enjoys reading, cooking and cycling.
Mr Jon Palmer
Consultant Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgeon
Mr Jon Palmer is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon with specialist expertise in knee surgery and orthopaedic trauma. He completed his medical training in London and undertook higher specialist training in orthopaedics within the Wessex region. During this time, he completed a period of academic research in musculoskeletal science, leading to the award of a Doctor of Philosophy (DPhil) from the University of Oxford.
Jon has a strong focus on the management of acute musculoskeletal injuries, with expertise in complex knee trauma. He further developed his sub-specialist interest in sports-related knee injuries through the prestigious Unisports Fellowship in Auckland, New Zealand, gaining experience in the surgical management of ligament injuries, meniscal repair, and cartilage restoration.
He is part of the acute trauma and orthopaedic team at Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, where he regularly manages patients with sports related knee injuries and injuries resulting from trauma.
Dedicated to delivering high-quality, patient-centred care, Jon is proud to be part of the Hampshire Fractures team, providing expert treatment for traumatic and sports-related knee conditions.
Mr Robert Boyd
Consultant Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgeon
Rob was awarded an International Travelling Fellowship in 2017 by the British Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society (BOFAS), where he trained with South Africa’s past Orthopaedic President, Adriaan VanZyl, in Cape Town. He returned to spend a year of specialist foot and ankle training with past BOFAS President Mr Heath Taylor in Bournemouth. Before he started his consultant role in Salisbury, Rob completed a fellowship with Professor Alex Trompeter at St. George’s hospital in London, learning skills needed to treat patients with complex fractures, deformity and bone infection.
Rob sees and treats a variety of acute and chronic conditions in the foot and ankle including arthritis, fractures, deformity and tendinitis.
Since starting in Salisbury, Rob has helped to develop the foot and ankle, where he has a busy NHS practice. His specialist training has enabled him to treat patients with complex fractures and bone infection where he works alongside plastic surgeons.
In his spare time Rob enjoys cycling, running and swimming.
